Joseph Grado Signature Holographic Sound
What is pure natural sound, what happens to it during recording, superb results or bad results? ......why????
Please read this total treatise on natural sound, doing so will improve your recordings considerably.
The signature holographic microphone system consists of two microphones so perfectly matched symetrically and in every other parameter that they absolutely act as one unit. During recording this is extremely important for it is the key to the holographic effect.
When stereo was introduced fifty plus years ago we were promised three dimensional sound, but what we got instead was dual mono sound with a dimensional effect mostly created by phase distortion. It consisted of two horizontally placed microphones picking up sound with a big hole between them. To add insult to injury they played this “three dimensional sound” through two loudspeakers having their own additional hole between them. Now in their brilliance, they filled the holes between the two mics with a third mic and the holes between the two loudspeakers with a third loudspeaker. The results were predictable. Now instead of having one hole between two units they had two holes between three mics and two holes between three speakers.
Five point surround sound has five holes between speakers and so on to infinity. Another way to get rid of the hole in the middle is to push the two speakers together, if you do this you will have perfect mono sound totally screwed up.
If you try to correct “the hole” electronically you will find pretty quickly that you can’t create nature’s infinite bits of density with man’s totally inadequate electronic processing, the best you can possibly expect is bits and pieces of chopped up sound loaded with all kinds of colorations.
A really top notch post processing person can really work wonders. Although that will take a lot of time and money.
If one wants to create perfect sound it is a very simple matter. Nature’s sound is perfect, so study it, understand it and don’t try to fit natures sound into your idea of what sound should be! You will spend a lot of work and time achieving nothing.
One of the keys to perfect sound is the control and elimination of any resonant colorations in your recording and reproducing system. If your systems are pure and devoid of any resonant colorations then it is a very simple thing to post process special effects without altering the basic pure sound since there are no acoustical interacting colorations. However, if you introduce one resonant colored sound into another resonant colored sound it will not be acceptable because when listening to the recording you will no longer have the basic pure sound to relate to. You will no longer be able to focus on the pure sound through the resonant colorations.
Let me show you pictorially what I am talking about.
I have prepared three pictures to illustrate how pure unrecorded natural sound could be visually displayed.
Picture #1 In this instance it is shown as a very pale light blue color. You will note that it is a solid mono tone color with no aberrations of any kind.
Within this area of light blue are a series of colored decals. Each one of these decals represent a musical instrument. The different colors of the decals indicate a different instrument. The type of instrument, as you will see, is immaterial.
The setting we have now achieved is a small group of instruments, not making a sound, sitting in a large silent room that is acoustically perfect for recording and or listening.
Suddenly the instruments start playing and the totally natural beauty of the sound takes your breath away. What you are hearing is live NATURAL SOUND!! Nothing in picture #1 has changed, because no distortion of any kind has been added to the sound.
Now let’s do a conventional multi-mike setup. This could consist of one mike for each instrument or a combination of placed mikes supported by several enhancement mikes.
How you place the mikes does not cause degradation of the natural sound it will only affect the proper balance of the instruments in the recording. BUT..........
remember that each of these microphones has a series of distinct resonant colorations and all the mikes colorations are different from each other.
Looking at illustration #2 after the recording, you will see that the natural sound quality of the recording has been destroyed! This type of recording, which is standard in the industry, has a high listening fatigue level due to the resonant color distortion that is now permeating the purity of the environment. This distorted result is totally independent of the type of musical material being recorded! The resonant coloration distortions are the only culprit.
With the room restored to picture #1 purity condition, that of a silent room with musical instruments silent. we set up the Signature Holographic System Holographic Scalera Scanner and do the same recording over again.
After the recording, picture #3 shows the recorded quality of the Signature Holographic System Holographic Scalera Scanner
Comparing pictures #1 and #3 you see that there is no difference of any kind between them. The Signature Holographic Scalera Scanner has recorded the total original natural sound exactly as it was in real life.
The Signature Holographic Scalera Scanner has no colorations of any sort, it has extremely low distortion, a true point source omni pickup and many other very advanced beyond state of the art features. The recordings made with the Holographic Scalera Scanner system are
"TRULY, THE BEGINNING OF PERFECT SOUND".
